Corona Island

The world's first single-use-plastic-free island, built as a brand experience.

Cannes Lions Shortlist 2023 · Three categories

A macaw perched on a carved wood sign reading "Live Corona Island"

Corona wanted to build a sustainable natural paradise on the Colombian coast, developed with local communities and built with local talent. Not a message about sustainability, a certified place: Oceanic, Plastic Free, Blue Standard sustainability seals, responsible construction.

The project was a strategic alliance between INMOV and DDB. DDB developed the idea. We directed the execution: the experience, the narrative, the copy, and the entire inner life of the island. Together with the architect we developed the umbrella concept, Listen to the Sea.

The experience was designed entirely from the narrative: ancestral cultures, nature, disconnection, the ocean. Listen to the sea, listen to the soul. The names of the bungalows, the activities and the experiences were all born from that story. This was not a campaign. It was a full experiential build in which the island was practically reconstructed: a turtle sanctuary, a monkey habitat, a bird refuge, a natural reserve, with every single-use plastic removed.

Cannes Lions 2023 shortlist. 27 industry awards, including 6 at El Dorado, a Silver Effie and a marketing effectiveness award. Global press and PR reach. And one metric no jury can give, and the one I love the most: a woman visited the island while pregnant, and named her daughter after the bungalow she stayed in. When a narrative enters a family, the brand has stopped advertising and started meaning something, because it was my creative partner and I who named the bungalows.
